Bryant-Denny Stadium

The world-famous home of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team is a top attraction in Tuscaloosa. It has been upgraded many times since opening in 1929, with three major expansions being undertaken since 1998. It is now the 8th largest non-racing stadium, by capacity, in the world. On game days in the fall, when the Crimson Tide is playing at home, the sell-out crowds utter those famous words: "Roll Tide."

The Origins of Football at the University

University of Alabama football dates all the way back to 1892. The program gained national recognition in 1922 after the team defeated the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1929 the field (now called Bryant-Denny Stadium) opened and crowds began to come in big numbers. The legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant led the team from 1958 to 1982 for a record-setting run that resulted in multiple championships. That tradition continues today as the Crimson Tide has won 15 national titles including one as recently as 2012.

History of the Mascot

The name Crimson Tide doesn’t bring elephants to mind, but it all began in the 1930’s when sports journalists began comparing the tough team to a pack of stampeding red elephants. The rest is history.
