Life of Paul Bear Bryant. Paul “Bear” Bryant was destined for life plowing fields as a farmer before his superstar talent for football raised him out of obscurity in Morro Bottom, Arkansas. Bryant was given a scholarship to play football at Alabama and later came back to helm the Alabama team as a coach, going on to be named SEC coach of the year eight times, taking top honors as national coach of the year three times. His teams played in six national championships and took home 323 victories. On November 28, 1981, Bryant became the winningest coach in college football history. [Top]
History of Paul Bear Bryant. The personal life of Paul Bear Bryant offers insights into his climb from Arkansas farmboy to football legend. Paul Bear Bryant was born September 11, 1913 in Moro Bottoms in southern Arkansas, the 11th of 12 children of Ida Kilgore and William Monroe Bryant. In 1933, in his first year in the Southeastern Conference, Bryant leads the Crimson Tide to take the SEC Championship. His love for Alabama never leaves him, and it is his experience playing for Alabama that would lead him to return as coach. [Top]
